The best car rental in Zurich depends on you

There is no single best provider. The city offers four models that fail in different ways, and five questions sort them faster than any review score.

Five questions worth asking before you book anything

Ask these of every provider you are considering, including this one. Four of the five are answered on a booking page, and the fifth tells you what happens when the trip does not go to plan.

  1. When do you actually pick it up?

A counter closes. Ask for the opening hours of the branch, not of the company. A 21:40 landing against an 18:00 desk is a problem no daily rate can fix.

  2. What gets held on your card?

Deposits in Zurich run from nothing at all to several hundred francs blocked for days. Ask for the number, not for the word standard.

  3. What is the deductible if you damage it?

Every offer includes damage protection at some deductible. The useful question is what it costs to bring that deductible down, and whether you can do it while booking or only at the desk.

  4. How many kilometres come with the day?

Some cars are unlimited and some are not, and the difference only shows up on the invoice. It belongs next to the car, before you pay.

  5. Where does the car have to go back?

Same spot, a different branch, or anywhere inside a zone. This decides your last hour in Zurich more than the daily rate ever will.

Where DRAIV fits, and where it does not

We would rather you booked the right thing somewhere else than the wrong thing here.

A good fit if

  • You arrive or leave outside office hours.
  • You want the total before you pay and nothing held on your card.
  • You are happy to return the car to the spot you took it from.
  • You want the exact car you booked rather than a category.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a one-way rental, to Geneva or across a border in one direction.
  • You want a staffed desk inside the terminal, right now.
  • You need a van, a nine-seater or a truck. Our fleet is cars.
  • You are under 21, or have held your licence for less than a year.

Choosing a rental in Zurich

It depends on how long you need the car. For a short errand carsharing usually wins, because you pay by the hour. From roughly half a day upward a rental is normally cheaper, because it stops billing you by the kilometre. DRAIV starts at CHF 44 a day from Monday to Thursday.

You need a card to pay with. What you do not need is room on it for a deposit, because DRAIV does not hold one.

Barely. Rental reviews mostly measure the counter, and when there is no counter the score is grading something you will never see. Read for the failure cases instead: late arrivals, damage disputes, and what happened when somebody needed to change a booking.

Carsharing sells access to a network, with a membership and an hourly plus per-kilometre tariff. A rental sells one car for a stretch of time. The network is what you pay for in the first model and what you give up in the second.

Insist on it anywhere you book. On DRAIV the total, including protection, service fee and VAT, is shown before payment, and the car in the picture is the car you get.

Booked in 2 minutes, on the road in 5.
